On May 17-18, 2015, UNFPA Armenia, with support from USAID, organized a workshop for journalists, devoted to "Reproductive Health of Families in Armenia".

All over the world maternal health is a priority for governments and societies. Safe sexual life, avoiding unwanted pregnancies and abortions are important preconditions for being a healthy parent. Everyone should have the knowledge of this, and first of all - the journalists, not only because they are important channels for knowledge sharing, but also because the majority of journalists in Armenia are young girls and women of reproductive age. That is why UNFPA held a workshop for them.

During the meeting we discussed reproductive health problems and achievements in Armenia, ine international experience in the use of contraceptives, myths and realities of traditional means of contraception, as well as ethics of awareness raising for reproductive health problems.

Garik Hayrapetyan, UNFPA Armenia Assistant Representative, mentioned that Armenia faces a problem of restoring and preserving its reproductive potential.

“Our research shows that secondary or acquired infertility is 12 per cent in Armenia. While it could be avoided simply by maintaining a healthy and safe sexual life”, said Mr. Hayrapetyan.

Dr. Gayane Avagyan, Head of Maternity and Reproductive Health Protection Unit, Ministry of Health, Mr. Vahan Asatryan, expert from International Center for Human Development, and journalist and trainer Gegham Vardanyan led the workshop.
