The current publication includes materials from 2013 conference “Demographic Challenges in Armenia” organized by RA Ministry of Labor and Social Issues and UNFPA Armenia Country Office. The conference gathered together academicians from Armenia, USA, Australia, and representatives from RA Government, RA National Assembly, and international organizations. The purpose of the conference was to present in depth studies of the country’s demographic issues and outline solutions to them.

“SEX IMBALANCES AT BIRTH IN ARMENIA: DEMOGRAPHIC EVIDENCE AND ANALYSIS” REPORT
The study report is prepared by Christophe Z Guilmoto, senior fellow at the French Institut de recherche pour le development (IRD, Research Institute for Development) based at CEPED in Paris and a leading expert on the issue of prenatal sex selection, at the request of UNFPA Armenia Country Office.
International Best Practices for the Prevention of Prenatal Sex Selection: Recommendations for Action for Armenia
As a contribution to the current research of UNFPA Armenia, this paper aims to identify best practices for the prevention of prenatal sex selection by examining previously successful instruments and campaigns internationally and then giving concrete recommendations for action in Armenia. It takes into consideration the specific notion of the phenomenon in Armenia as presented in the recent UNFPA report on “Prevalence of and Reasons for Sex-selective Abortions in Armenia”.
“The Lost Balance: Son Preference in Armenia” project book
“The Lost Balance: Son Preference in Armenia” project book is an attempt to voice and visualize the problem of son preference in Armenia. The book is comprised of two components: articles covering prenatal sex selection submitted to 2011 Na/Ne Media Awards; and works of young Armenian photographer Narek Bakhtamyan devoted to son preference in Armenia.
“Prevalence of and Reasons for Sex Selective Abortions in Armenia” Report
This study has been conducted within the framework of the Strengthening Sexual and Reproductive Health Services project implemented through the cooperation of the Republic of Armenia (RoA) Ministry of Health, the Institute of Reproductive Health, Perinatology, Obstetrics and Gynecology, and the UNFPA Armenia Country Office.
“Woman’s Image in Armenian Media” Study Report (in Armenian)
“Woman’s Image in Armenian Media” study was conducted by Pro-Media Gender NGO with support from UNFPA Armenia. The purpose of the study was to examine woman’s image as portrayed by the Armenian media, in respect with overcoming stereotypes regarding the role and place of a woman in Armenian society.

Nationwide Survey on Domestic Violence Against Women in Armenia 2008-2010
The research consists of a quantitative survey component providing representative information at 1) Yerevan, 2) other urban and 3) rural levels. The sampling frame for the survey was built on the database of addresses created for the 2001 Population Census. All the regions (marzes), as well as all urban and rural settlements were included in the sample population according to the share of population residing in those settlements as percent to the total population in the country.
Analysis of Results of the Sample Survey on Fertility Preferences of Armenian Population, 2009
The Sample Survey on Fertility Preferences of Armenian Population was conducted by the National Statistical Service of RA, the Ministry of Labor and Social Issues of RA and National Institute of Labor and Social Researches during June-December 2009. The United Nations Population Fund (UNFPA), within the framework of Population and Development (PD) Project has provided financial and technical assistance. The purpose of the current Survey is to study the development of system of family values and reproductive behavior motivations within current social and economic conditions, to identify and analyze main factors conditioning family situation, to present recommendations for overcoming major problems.
