The United Nations Population Fund (UNFPA), within the “EU 4 Gender Equality: Together against gender stereotypes and gender-based violence” programme (phase 2), partnered with the private sector in Armenia to enhance awareness and knowledge of gender equality issues.

The workshop, conducted on May 29, 2024, for Armpower CJSC staff, Renco Armestate Company representatives, and Siemens Energy employees, improved the knowledge of 23 participants on gender equality, inadmissibility of discrimination, and violence.

"We are thrilled to have received a cooperation offer from a private company and to outline new collaborative ways for us. I think that this is a strategic direction with great potential. This initiative is an important start on enhancing knowledge on gender equality and raising gender sensitivity in the private sector," said Taguhi Harutyunyan, Programme Analyst at the UNFPA Armenia office.

Paolo Paffumi, the General Director of Armpower CJSC, emphasized women's vital role and contributions within the company's operations. He reiterated Armpower CJSC's unwavering commitment to eliminate discrimination against women and girls while fostering equal opportunities for their professional growth and success.

“Equal management and respect are core values for the company, and gender equality is one of Armpower's key objectives for 2024”.

One of the workshop participants, Nazareth Mermeryan, 28, mentioned his interest in understanding the situation of gender equality in Armenia. "Of course, there are gender disparities, for example, offering a seat to women in public transport, which is viewed positively in society as a sign of courteous behavior. But on the other hand, equality must be ensured regarding rights and opportunities. For example, if a woman and a man possess similar professional skills and experience, they should have equal employment and receive fair compensation."

The workshop addressed the topics of gender equality, overcoming stereotypes, and violence prevention, as well as discussed why private companies should contribute to maintaining gender equality in their workforce.

"Such initiatives are unique in Armenia, especially considering that the request to train the staff comes from the private sector. It was also an excellent opportunity for us to assess the needs in the private sector and better comprehend what approaches are needed when working with them. It was great that none of the participants remained indifferent, proving that this topic interests many. Such discussions should be organized often," said Arman Gharibyan, gender issues expert conducting the workshop.

The workshop presented studies showing that increasing women's participation in the workforce and decision-making improves their well-being and increases overall productivity, profits, and the ability to develop innovative products and services.

"This is my first time participating in a workshop on this topic and format. It was quite active and interesting. I was excited to learn the opinions of my colleagues. It is essential that women and men have equal opportunities, that the role of women is highly valued, and that women are not only perceived as housewives and mothers but also that their potential in the workplace and decision-making is valued. Regardless of gender, people should have the opportunity to realize their potential," emphasized workshop participant 30-year-old Knarik Petrosyan.
