The analytical part of the draft demographic strategy of Armenia was presented at the session of the Council for the Improvement of the Demographic Situation, which was chaired by the RA Deputy Prime Minister Hambardzum Matevosyan.
It included both a thorough analysis of key demographic factors and a demographic forecasting model that would underpin the strategy itself; that is, why and what awaits Armenia from a demographic point of view.
UNFPA is supporting the Government of Armenia - with the Ministry of Labor and Social Affairs as the lead - in developing a new demographic strategy to address demographic change comprehensively and based on evidence and human rights, in cooperation with the Ameria consulting company. Leading institutes in the field of demographic research, such as the Wittgenstein Center for Demography and Global Human Capital and Charles University in Prague, as well as UNFPA leading demographic experts, are also involved in the development of the document.
UNFPA, as the only international partner invited to the work of the Council for the Improvement of the Demographic Situation chaired by the Prime Minister of Armenia, continuously contributes to the improvement of the demographic resilience of the country.
The development of the demographic strategy of Armenia is an urgent task for the Government of Armenia, taking into account the demographic challenges the country is facing and their significant impact on the country's development, as well as the imperative to consider demographic factors in the current government policy development and decision-making process. In that respect, the Government of Armenia, through the Ministry of Labor and Social Affairs, had applied to UNFPA to support them in the process of development of its new demographic strategy.
In response, UNFPA is providing technical support through its international experts especially in the field of demographic resilience, rights-based, family-friendly policies, as well as through involving renowned international experts from the leading academic institutions such as the Wittgenstein Center for Demography and Global Human Capital and Charles University in Prague. UNFPA supported the Government of Armenia also in hiring a local expert company, Ameria, to lead the development process locally.
The support to the development of the demographic strategy of Armenia is provided through the CISPop “Better Data for Better Policies”, which is a regional UNFPA programme supported by the Russian Federation to strengthen population data collection, analysis and utilization for evidence-based policy-making in the CIS region.
The final version of the demographic strategy will be discussed at the Wittgenstein Center for Demography and Global Human Capital, after which it will be put up for public discussion.
