calendar_today 20 May 2014

On 20 May 2014, at the request of the Parliamentary Standing Committee on Health Care, Maternity and Childhood, UNFPA Armenia country office made a presentation at the National Assembly of Armenia, during a working meeting devoted to the issue of prenatal sex selection. The working meeting was led by Mr. Ara Babloyan, Chairman of the Committee, and Ms. Hermine Naghdalyan, Vice President of the National Assembly․ The participants included members of the Committee, as well as of other committees such as the Standing Committee on Science, Education, Culture, Youth and Sport, as well as members of Youth Parliament, and representatives of USAID parliamentary strengthening program in Armenia․

During the working meeting Mr. Garik Hayrapetyan, UNFPA Armenia Assistant Representative, presented the situation with prenatal sex selection both in the world and in Armenia in particular. He also outlined the international best practices in tackling prenatal sex selection worldwide. In particular, experience of countries such as South Korea, China and India was presented. The presentation also included possible mechanisms that the National Assembly may consider when approaching the issue of prenatal sex selection both from the "demand" (son preference) and the "supply" (availability of relevant technologies and services) sides.

Mr. Ara Babloyan, Chairman of the Parliamentary Standing Committee on Health Care, Maternity and Childhood, informed the participants about a draft law, still not in official ciculation, targeting prenatal sex selection that they had received from the Ministry of Health. According to Mr. Babloyan, in that respect it was important first to listen to what UNFPA had to say about the issue.

UNFPA presentation was followed by a Q&A session with Mr. Hayrapetyan, which concluded the working meeting - an important step in formulating solutions to prenatal sex selection in Armenia.
