Ijevan, 22 April 2022 – The EU-funded "Family Corner" in Armenia opened in Ijevan on 22 April. "Family Corner" is a family-friendly place where young men and women can learn parenting skills and positive ways to address family challenges.
"Family Corner" in Ijevan was established in cooperation with Gyumri Youth Initiatives Centre NGO as part of the "EU 4 Gender Equality: Together against gender stereotypes and gender-based violence" regional programme, funded by the European Union and implemented jointly by UNFPA and UN Women.
The official opening of the "Family Corner" brought together representatives of the Government of Armenia, the Tavush region administration, UNFPA Armenia, Gyumri Youth Initiatives Centre, and local NGOs.
"Our mission is to create such an environment in our country where each individual can fully realize his/her potential for the benefit of the families, the community, and the state. We work with both women and men, trying to empower women on the one hand, and involve men more in family and childcare on the other," said Tsovinar Harutyunyan, Head of the UNFPA Armenia.
"Family Corner" opened in Ijevan is the third in Armenia. The "Family Corner" resource centers have been operating in Shirak since 2020 and Vanadzor since 2021.
"The state policy of Armenia focused on strengthening the families. The government continues to take actions to integrate the gender component into the legislation and improve the national mechanisms for women's empowerment. It is important for us to overcome stereotypes in society, prevent domestic violence, and combat gender discrimination,"- said Tatevik Stepanyan, Deputy Minister of Labour and Social Affairs of Armenia․
According to Arthur Najaryan, Chairman of the International Board of Gyumri Youth Initiatives Centre NGO, the center will be a safe, comfortable platform for women and men as well as various state and nongovernmental initiatives in Ijevan.
Mariam, one of the beneficiaries of Ijevan Family Corner, who cut the red ribbon with her husband, stressed: "This is a significant initiative for the youth and families of the Tavush region. In this Family Corner, we meet and discuss the best approaches to parenting and a strong family."
The live exhibition "Dads Matter" prepared by "Arevik" Center students and a musical performance by Ijevan Music School's students were part of the official opening ceremony.
