On October 1, 2014, a press conference devoted to the International Day of Older Persons was held at Post Scriptum press club. The speakers of the press conference were Mr. Garik Hayrapetyan, UNFPA Armenia Assistant Representative, and Ms. Anahit Gevorgyan, Head of Older Persons Division, Ministry of Labor and Social Affairs of Armenia.

As Mr. Hayrapetyan mentioned, today, around 12 per cent of the world's population is over 60. While in Armenia the share of 60+ population is 12.8 per cent. This means an ageing society.

“If things do not change in Armenia, people aged 65 and over will constitute 23% of the population, and people aged 60 and over will constitute 26 to 27 per cent. A third of our population will be elderly people. At best, elderly people will constitute 20% of the country’s population by 2015,” said UNFPA Armenia Assistant Representative.

"Taking into consideration these circumstances, it would be unwise not to think about their impact on the future, and to miss the opportunity to efficiently use the potential of older persons and to involve the elderly in the development processes", he said.
