On August 29, 2014, a press conference devoted to the issue of prenatal sex selection and the recent "What About You - Do you Have a Daighter?" facebook campaign was held at the Media Center.
Ms. Karine Saribekyan, Head of Mother and Child Health Department, RA Ministry of Health, Mr. Garik Hayrapetyan, UNFPA Armenia Assistant Representative, Mr. Samvel Martirosyan, Media Expert, and one of the initiators of the facebook campaign, Mr. Aramazd Ghalamkaryan.
"We have one task: prevent, decrease and exclude prenatal sex selection in Armenia", said Karine Saribekyan as an opening remark.
Mr. Hayrapetyan mentioned that there are around 50,000 more boys than girls among those born after 1993 in Armenia, which could lead to serious demographic deviations in the future.
According to Mr. Ghalamkaryan, one of the initiators of the "What About You - Do you Have a Daighter?" facebook campaign that within just a week became very popular on Armenian facebook territory, a girl child may bring as much joy - if not more - than a boy child, especially to fathers.
Media expert Mr. Samvel Martirosyan thinks that in terms of its impact and active participation the facebook campaign may well be compared with such an important event as the elections.
