On July 11, 2016, UNFPA Armenia held a press conference at the newly opened "Article 3" human rights club to mark the 2016 World Population Day and to present some findings from its new Population Situation Analysis for Armenia.
Mr. Garik Hayrapetyan, UNFPA Armenia Assistant Representative, and Mrs. Anna Hovhannisyan, coordinator for UNFPA Armenia "Support to Implementation of Population Policies" project spoke at the press conference.
Mr. Hayrapetyan spoke about the World Population Day as the day to focus global attention to population issues worldwide. He then described this year's topic and the challenges that teenage girls are facing today around the world, including child marriage and female genital mutilation.
This year, the World Population Day was devoted to Investing in Teenage Girls, for a more just, stable and peaceful world. As UNFPA Executive Director Dr. Babatunde Osotimehin mentioned in his statement, "Governments everywhere need to invest in teenage girls in ways that empower them to make important life decisions and equip them to one day earn a living, engage in the affairs of their communities and be on an equal footing with their male counterparts."
UNFPA also presented some findings of the newly completed Population Situation Analysis for Armenia focusing on three main areas: youth issues, ageing, and reproductive health issues. The presentation was followed by a Q&A.
