In Armenia almost every second pregnancy ends in abortion. On average Armenian women undergo 2 abortions during their liftime. Unsafe abortions can lead to grave consequences:infertility, disability, death, while simple knowledgable use of contraceptives allows avoiding these.

In order to contribute to the solution to this issue, UNFPA has supported creation of 75 family planning units throughout Armenia, that provide free of charge medical councelling and modern means of contracetions to the population. As a result, the contraception use indicator has increased from 1 per cent (in 1994) up to 27 per cent (in 2010).

Moreover, there have been no registered cases of maternal death caused by abortion since 2000.
