On 30 April 2014, a press conference was held at Yerevan Blitz Info press club. The press conference was devoted to the issue of infertility both in Armenia and the region, as well as the world as a whole. Mr. Garik Hayrapetyan, UNFPA Armenia Assistant Representative was the guest speaker to the press conference.

The speaker presented the findings of the last WHO report on the issue of infertility, according to which there have not been any significant changes in infertility prevalence worldwide during the last decade.

Speaking about Armenia, Mr. Hayrapetyan referred to UNFPA Clinical and Epidemiological Survey on Etiology, Prevalence of Infertile Marriages, pointing out that Armenia's infertility rate is almost 17 per cent, the critical level set by the WHO being 15 per cent. Primary infertility rate in Armenia is around 5 per cent, and secondary infertility that is preventable infertility level is around 12 per cent. The two most significant causes for secondary infertitlity are unsafe abortions and sexually transmitted infections.

As the speaker noted, to tackle the problem, there is a need to inform and educate the public, as well as to ensure availability and accessibility of modern contraceptives for all population groups.
